This beauty is a Vireya, it is a kind of Rhododendron and they come in hundreds of colors and combinations as well as scented or unscented, big or small, tropical or not, etc...talk about a all purpose plant! They are very well suited for Hawaii and while this one happens to be growing in my friends yard the Vireya society has put together a wonderful planting at the Panaewa zoo in Hilo, its amazing what a handful of dedicated volunteers can do with a little time, a little space and lots of plants!
