Kupu Kupu Fern...

This delightful little fern caught my eye the other day, it's just starting to unfurl its leaves and the colors were so striking, especially the silvery green of the newest leaves yet to open...
This is called the Kupu Kupu fern in Hawaii and the Boston fern in other places...

What a beautiful photo of a simple fern. I've a boston fern here but it doesn't look as interesting as your photo.

I took a lei making class today in Kilauea on Kaua'i. We used the Kupu Kupu fern. We were taught, by a Hawaiian Kumu from a long lineage of Hawaiian Kumus, that the Kupu Kupu fern is not the same as the Boston Fern. The fern in your photo looks to be a Boston Fern; the Kupu Kupu fern looks very different when observed closely. Where as the frond of the Boston Fern is much wider at it's base, the Kupu Kupu is not.

I guess we will have to leave it up to the botanist :)) I honestly wouldn't know the difference but thanks for letting us know that there is a difference! There are so many beautiful ferns in Hawaii, I would love to know more about them...
